Te Ahu a Turanga

Temporary works to support bridge construction across the Manawatu River

As part of temporary works to allow access for HEB Construction to build Pier 3 on Bridge 2 on the Te Ahu a Turanga project across the Manawatu River, a 10m retained height retaining wall was required to support the railway above.

Groundfix was engaged to complete the installation of 13no temporary strand anchors to a depth of 27m. Each anchor comprised 5 x 15.2mm strands each with temporary casing to 15m.

Three sacrificial trial anchors were installed and tested to failure to prove the assumed grout to ground bond strength along with a small soil nailed and shotcrete wall installed above the wall.

This job had very challenging ground conditions including saturated loose gravels and silts into an underlying conglomerate.

In addition to Pier 3 works we also completed a staged excavation soil nail and mesh slope for the excavation of Pier 1. This comprised of 80no, 12m deep hollow bar self drilling soil nails using grout flush.
